Permanent Way Maintenance and Renewal

There has been much structural research into ballasted permanent way. However, extra precautions are needed in critical soils to prevent the upward migration of fines into the ballast and the dissolution of the soils by rainwater, which causes voids to form. More recently, full-size trials and laboratory testing have made it possible to select a thick bituminous geomembrane, that can be placed under the ballast during track maintenance or when building new track.

Railways on Low Bearing Capacity Soil

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) operates one of the largest rail networks in North America, with approximately 33,500 route miles covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces.

As part of a continuing effort to improve the reliability and efficiency of key sections of railway, BNSF identified several sections of track requiring refurbishment. The solution that Engineers at BNSF chose, was to treat the upper part of the clay with lime, and to cover the clay surface with a bituminous geomembrane liner, to inhibit water from coming into contact with the surface of the plastic clay.
